There is more to fear from the sky than dragons.

Violence and devastation spreads through Margra as the Inspector’s influence grows throughout the once peaceful lands. But Salinda, one of the Inspector’s most important weapons, has escaped. After being rescued by Nils, the last of his race, she is brought to the wondrous subterranean city of Barrahiem. With Nils’ vast store of knowledge and access to pre-Shatterwing technology, Salinda sees a way to defeat the Inspector, but only if she can convince him that humankind is worth saving.

Above ground, Brill and rebel leader, Danton, march for the observatory of Trithorn Peak, the only city yet to fall to the Inspector’s forces. With them are one of Trithorn’s Skywatchers, and a mysterious young woman whose eyes reflect a power not unlike Salinda’s. This misfit crew must work with Trithorn’s remaining Skywatchers to prepare for a desperate battle, not only for the observatory but for the future of Margra. For it is not only the Inspector that threatens their precious lands, and the Skywatchers are the only ones that can save them from the final moonfall.

Science Fantasy Book Review by Mulluane

The story picks up right where Shatterwing left off and follows the same winding path. Individual storylines merge, split, then merge again. The tension ramps up as the evil Inspector destroys everything in his path. Usually in the most horrible way possible.

Joust (The Dragon Jousters #1) by Mercedes Lackey | Epic Fantasy | Book Review

Mulluane | 3:30 PM | 7 Comments so far

For the first time ever, national best-selling legend Mercedes Lackey draws from her extensive knowledge of animals-and her professional background as an avian expert-to create something truly special...

The most exciting, authentic and believable portrayal of dragons ever imagined.

It is a richly conceived, fully realized vision, inspired by the culture of ancient Egypt, the legends of Atlantis-and the science of animal behavior and biology. This is how dragons would live, breed, hatch, hunt, and bond.

The first book in this thrilling new series introduces readers to a young slave who dreams of becoming a Jouster-one of the few warriors who can actually ride a flying dragon. And so, in secret, he begins to raise his own dragon.

The story of Vetch has now become the story of Kiron, Son of Kiron. No longer is he Vetch the serf or even Vetch the dragon boy. To be accepted by the people of his birth he must go through a rebirth of self. He must become Kiron the Jouster not just outwardly, but inwardly as well. And this is not as easy as it might sound.

Feast of Souls (Magister Trilogy #1) by C.S. Friedman

Mulluane | 11:30 AM | 4 Comments so far

At the end of her bestselling Coldfire Trilogy, C.S. Friedman challenged readers to imagine what a world would be like if sorcery required the ultimate sacrifice–that of life itself. Now, in a groundbreaking new fantasy novel, FEAST OF SOULS, she introduces us to a terrifying new world in which the cost of magic is just that–a world in which the fuel for sorcery is the very fire of the human spirit, and those who hunger for magical power must pay for it with their lives. In this epic tale of terrifying shadows and desperate hope, the greatest threat of all may not be that of ancient enemies returned, or ancient wars resumed, but of the darkness that lies within the hearts of men.

Wings of Wrath (Magister Trilogy #2) by C.S. Friedman

Mulluane | 1:00 PM | 2 Comments so far

In a world where spells are fueled by the essence of one’s own life, the young peasant woman Kamala has proven strong and determined enough to claim the most powerful sorcery for her own. But her rise to power is not without cost. The shadowy brotherhood of Magisters now hunts her for killing one of their kind, and her only hope of survival may lie in fleeing to the northern Protectorates, where spells are warped by a curse called the Wrath and the shadow of an ancient Enemy is once more falling across the land. Joining company with the Guardian Rhys, she will soon discover the true origin of the Wrath, and learn of an ancient artifact that might awaken the northern bloodlines to their true potential…if it does not drive them mad first.

For an ancient Enemy has indeed returned to the civilized lands — a creature said to feed upon the souls of men — and its human agents are already hard at work. In the High Kingdom, where the monk Salvator Aurelius has just claimed his father’s throne, the unity of a great empire is about to be tested…along with its ruler’s faith. In the halls of Kierdwyn, the terrible truth at the heart of the Guardians’ mission is about to be revealed. And in warm southern climes of Sankara, the woman called Witch-Queen is about to receive an offer she dares not refuse: true immortality, and with it revenge upon the Magisters who used and abandoned her. But acceptance will require that she become something other than human, and agree to serve those who pave the way for the souleaters’ return.

Wings of Wrath (The Magister Trilogy, #2)

There is a certain beauty to an Epic Fantasy when things go from bad to worse. Especially when you don't really believe such a thing is possible. No subject is taboo. Moral dilemmas are explored in exacting detail and nobody is safe from scrutiny.

To save the world the last Souleater Queen must be killed. A daunting task and by no means a certain one. Fortunately we might just have the right mix of heroes and heroines to do the job. If they can all somehow manage to get along.
